Saturday, the 2nd of December, 1922, saw the Sheffield Daily Telegraph publish a news report:

A "SPORTY" CAR.
Sheffield Action at Leeds Assizes.

The sale of a "sporty" car by Mr. Raymond Beetham Nicholson, of 13 Broomgrove Road, Sheffield, to Mr. Frank Herbert Coker, engineer, of 101, Abbeydale Road, Sheffield, was the cause of those gentleman appearing in the Civil Court at the Leeds Assizes yesterday, when the purchaser brought an action for damages for alleged misrepresentation.
Mr. R. A. Shepherd appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. J. Willoughby Jardine appeared for the defendant.
Plaintiff said that when he purchased the car it was described as a car of 1912 manufacture. After he had paid a deposit, it was found to be a car of the date of 1908.  He never took it out, but on the defendant refusing to have the car back it was put into an auction and sold for 50 guineas.
Defendant said that he was an engineer employed by Messrs. Vickers, and in March, 1920, he purchased the car. He did not then know in what year it was manufactured.
In 1921, a new form of motor taxation came into force. He then discovered that the car was of a date prior to 1913, and therefore only assessable on a lower rate of taxation.
In March, 1922, he placed it in the hands of Mr. H. W. Gallimore for the purpose of selling it, and stipulated that the price must not be less than £200.
He did not see Mr. Coker until they went for a trial run.
Mr. Justice Rigby Swift asked Mr. Shepherd if he insured the car. Defendant replied in the negative.
The judge: It horrifies me to find a man driving a motor-car about the country without being insured.
Mr. Gallimore, of the firm of Holmes and Younie, said he did not tell Mr. Coker that it was a 1912 car.  He said he could not say any date, but it was prior to 1913.

Noah's Ark Appearance.

Mr. Shepherd:  Does it surprise you to know that the car only realised fifty guineas when put up for auction? - An auction is not a proper place in which to sell a car of that nature.
Mr. F. Essam, of 361, Glossop Road, Sheffield, motor engineer, said that in the spring of this year the car would be worth about £100 to £170.
The Judge said he was satisfied the case arose from the use of language by the defendant, which conveyed the impression which he did not intend to convey.
He was quite satisfied that the defendant and Mr. Gallimore had no other intention than that of telling the truth.
Mr. Coker was entitled to damages. He gave £190 for the car and sold it for 50 guineas, receiving £47 5s. actually, and he claimed for the difference.
It was not the sort of car that anybody would have bought. It was a 1908 Singer, with a "sporty" body. A great deal of the difficulty of selling it at a public auction was because of its somewhat Noah's Ark like appearance, being something of a torpedo and something of a landaulette. It had something of the appearance of a speedy car, although, in fact, it was not a very speedy car.
Therefore, he (the Judge) had come to the conclusion that £47 5s. was not the real value of that very peculiar sort of car, and found that the difference in the value of a car of 1908 and 1912 was £75, and he gave judgement for the plaintiff for that sum, with costs.
Application for High Court costs was not acceded to.

1932

Monday, the 1st of February, 1932 sees in the Sheffield Daily Telepgraph’s publication the following letter to the editor:

Letters to the Editor.

JUMBLE SALE IN AID OF
SHEFFIELD DISTRESS.

Sir, - The City of Sheffield Women’s Advisory Committee, in response to an appeal issued to the whole of England by the head-quarters of the Conservative and Unionist Women’s Organisations to form national emergency working parties to help cases of distress in industrial areas, have decided that the needs of the City of Sheffield can best be served by raising a fund immediately instead of trying to form working parties. It is recognised that all persons of good will are already working to this end and it would be impossible to form such parties without over-lapping.
The Committee has therefore decided to organise a jumble sale on a large scale, to be held in the Lower Cutlers’ Hall on Tuesday, February 23rd. By this means help can be given in two ways. The poor of the city can buy good second-hand clothing at purely nominal prices and the proceeds of the sale will be handed to a recognised charitable organisation in the city for distribution, regardless, of course, of the political views held by the recipients.
Our Committee is therefore appealing for gifts of garments, boots, shoes, household goods, etc., in fact anything and everything that is saleable.
A depot will be opened for the receipt of goods on Monday, February 15th, at 148, West Street, which premises have, through the generosity of Messrs. Wm. Hutton and Sons, Ltd., been placed free of all charge at the disposal of the Committee. The depot will be open daily between the hours of 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. and the Committee are confident that their friends will help them to ensure the success of this effort to bring some measure of assistance to those who, through no fault of their own, are passing through a period of acute hardship and difficulty. - Yours, etc.,
      VERA MATTHEWS,
            Chairman Women’s Advisory Committee.
      MARGARET RANKIN,
            Chairman Jumble Sale Committee.

1933

It appears the escapades of an escaped cow are making the news around Yorkshire in the local press publications …

In the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer newspaper publication of Saturday, the 12th of August, 1933, the following article appeared:

COW IMPALED
Escapades of Beast at Sheffield

A cow on its way to a slaughter-house met with a remarkable accident in Sheffield last night. The beast was being driven down Broomgrove Road, when, because of the traffic, it got out of hand, and bolted. Pedestrians gave chase, but the animal ran into a garden in East Grove Road. Seeing no way out, it attempted to leap over some railings, five feet high, and became impaled on the spikes. The police were summoned, but were unable to release it. The fire brigade were called, and they also failed, so a butcher from the slaughter-house shot it.

The Leeds Mercury on the same day carried a similar report:

COW IMPALED
Police and Fire Brigade Called to Assistance

A cow in Broomgrove Road, Sheffield while on its way to the slaughterhouse got out of hand owing to the traffic and bolted. It ultimately found its way into a garden in East Grove Road.
Having no means of egress, the cow attempted to leap over some iron railings, five feet high. Not jumping high enough, it became impaled on the spikes and suffered terrible agony.
The police were summoned, but were unable to effect its release owing to its weight. The fire brigade also was called, but the animal eventually was shot by a butcher.

Finally, the Halifax Evening Courier joined in on the reporting the same day too:

COW IMPALED ON SPIKE

In an effort to escape from a Sheffield garden, into which it had dashed while being driven from Fulwood yesterday, a frenzied cow attempted to jump an iron railing, four feet high, and was impaled on one of the spikes. The cow, which belonged to a Sheffield firm of butchers, was being driven from Fulwood to the Sheffield Corporation abattoir in Cricket Inn-road, when it took fright in Clarkehouse-road, and ran into the garden at the junction of Eastgrove-road and Broomgrove-road. It careered madly round the garden to finding no way of escape attempted to leap the iron railing. It became impaled and as it could not be released it was slaughtered with a humane killer.

1939

In December 1938 it was announced in the House of Commons that in the event of war, a national register would be taken that listed the personal details of every civilian in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This register was to be a critical tool in coordinating the war effort at home. It would be used to issue identity cards, organise rationing and more.

On September 1st, 1939, Germany invaded Poland, putting the wheels in motion for Britain to declare war on the 3rd of September. By September 5th, the National Registration Act received Royal Assent and Registrar General Sir Sylvanus Vivian announced that national registration day would be September 29th, 1939 …
