The 1861 Census

The 1861 census was taken on Sunday 7th of April. Present in the home on that date were:

Emma Bingham (??), Edward’s wife
Emma Mary Bingham (24), their daughter
Elizabeth H Bingham (16), their daughter
Charles Henry Bingham (12), their son
Agnes J Dyson (23), a vistor

Edward Bingham (52), a Sheffield born wholesale grocer, was away lodging that night (staying at 11 Carlisle Parade, Hastings)

Domestic servants Sarah Denton (26) and Mary Bamforth (22) are also in residence that night.

    Widow Sarah Watkinson (68), β€œgentlewoman”, is the first listed occupier of No. 2. She is in residence with un-married daughters Sarah W. (37), Charlotte (33) and Fanny (28) plus two domestic servants.

  • No. 4 Broomgrove Road - The Harwood Family
    Widow Hannah Harwood (56) is still in residence at No. 4 along with son William S. (33) and daughter Elizabeth A. (26) - both un-married. There is also two domestic servants present on the night of the Census.

  • No. 6 Broomgrove Road - The Eyre Family
    No. 6 is the home of cutlery manufacturer, Benjamin J, Eyre (49), wife Julia (42), and one domestic servant.

  • No. 8 Broomgrove Road - The Cates Family
    Thomas Cates (68) and wife Charlotte (54) are at home with a single domestic servant on the night of the census.

  • No. 10 Broomgrove Road - The Hebblethwaite Family
    Schoolmaster Edward Hebblethwaite (53) is again in residence at No. 10, alongside wife Harriet (50) and un-married daughters Fanny (25) and Lucy H. (19). Edwards widowed father, Robert (83), is also in residence. A single domestic servant looks after the family.

  • No. 12 Broomgrove Road - The Robinson Family
    Derby born tobacco manufacturer John J. Robinson (46) and wife Sarah (44) are in residence along with their son - John H. (11). One domestic servant looks after the family.

  • No. 14 Broomgrove Road - The Broomhead Family
    Widowed Elizabeth Broomhead (52), un-married children Elizabeth (24), Barbara (23), Henry (20) and Martha (16) are looked after by just one domestic servant.

  • No. 16 Broomgrove Road - The Bell Family
    James and Mary Bell (both 60) along with married son Samuel (29) and un-married daughters Mary J. (27) and Fanny (25) share the house with one domestic servant.

  • No. 18 Broomgrove Road - The Gilmour Family
    Scotland’s Duncan Gilmour (44), a wine, spirit, stout and ale merchant and Irish wife Eliza (42) have a full house with daughters Eliza (15), Jane (13), Ellen (11) and Agnes (11 months) and sons Duncan (9) and Charles (7). All are looked after by two domestic servants.

  • No. 20. Broomgrove Road- The Cam Family
    ”Gentlewoman” Mary Cam (61) is in residence at the time of the census. She shares the house with just one domestic servant.

  • No. 22 Broomgrove Road (Front) - The Swift Family
    Tobacco manufacturer, John Swift (52) and wife Mary A. (50) are now in residence at No. 22. They share their home with un-married sons - Samuel C. (26) and Frederick (21) - both tobacco manufacturer’s, un-married daughter Maria (19) and scholar sons John K. (16) and Frank (13). Daughter Elizabeth (19) is also visiting their home on the night of the census. One domestic servant is looking after the whole family.

  • 59 Clarkehouse Road - The Branson Family
    Solicitor Thomas Branson (68) and his wife Martha (66) are still residence, along with un-married daughters Caroline H. (40) and Harriet M. (27) and merchant son John H. (30). With less people in the household than 10 years ago, they are now being looked after by just two domestic servants.

  • No. 9 Broomgrove Road - The Frith Family
    The cottage still has the Frith family in residence - Optician Peter, (67), and wife Frances (53). Son Walter (24), also an optician, is also in residence along with two domestic servants.

  • No. 11 Broomgrove Road - The Parker Family
    Broomgrove House is still the home of retired merchant, Samuel Parker (72). His widowed sister, Jane Casson (68), is now Housekeeper. Two domestic servants make up the Parker household.

  • No. 23 Broomgrove Road - The Ibbotson Family
    Gentlewoman widow Mary Ibbotson (66) and her un-married children - merchants Henry T (39) and Alfred B. (31), solicitors clerk Henry W. (23) and daughter Anne F. (27) are all still in residence. There are still two domestic servants looking after the family.

1863

The Sheffield Independent publication of Saturday the 14th of March, 1863 carried the announcement:

MARRIAGES

BINGHAM - FAWCETT.- March 9th, at the Parish Church, by the Rev. J. Burbidge, John Edward, elder son of Edward Bingham, Esq., Broom Grove, to Maria, second daughter of William Fawcett, Esq., Clarke House.

1865

Friday, 9th of June 1865 saw the Sheffield Independent publish the article:

THE CAMBRIDGE MIDDLE-CLASS
EXAMINATIONS.
SPEECH OF MR. ROEBUCK.

    The certificates and prizes gained by the pupils examined in this town, in 1863 and 1864, were distributed yesterday in the Cutlers' Hall.  The chair was taken by J. A. Roebuck, Esq., M/P., who was received with applause on entering the hall ; and amongst the gentlemen present were the Rev. Canon Sale, D.D. ; Rev. S. Earnshaw, M.A. ; Rev. W. Wilkinson ; Rev. E. Newman ; Rev. J. F . Witty ; Samuel Roberts, Esq., J. P. ; Robert Younge, Esq. ; W. P. Milner, Esq., J.P. ; Henry Vickers, Esq. ; Rev. Lettis Short (Upper Chapel), Rev. J. P. On Friday the 15th of June 1866, the Sheffield Daily Telegraph published the following notice :

MARRIAGES.

      On the 13th inst., at St. Peter’s Church, Sheffield, by the Rev, Canon Sale, D.D., assisted by the Rev. H. Wright, Edward Vaughan Birks, Esq , of Fairfield, Sheffield, to Elizabeth Hedgeland, daughter of Edward Bingham, Esq., Broomgrove, Sheffield.

LOCAL NEWS

EVENTS OF THE DAY

      FASHIONABLE WEDDING.- The marriage of Mr. Edward V. Birks, to Lillah, second daughter of Edward Bingham, Esq., of Broomgrove, was celebrated at the Parish Church, on Wednesday, in the presence of a large concourse of spectators. The service was conducted by the Rev. Dr. Sale, vicar, and the Rev. H. H. Wright, of St. James's. The bride wore a dress of white satin, sleeves trimmed with pendant coins of mother-of-pearl; orange blossom wreath with tulle veil. The brides-maids were-Miss Bingham, Miss Pye-Smith, Miss Dyson, and Miss Atkin. They were dressed in white muslin, with broad sashes of mauve, crossing one shoulder and falling to the bottom of the skirt ; white bonnets, and long net veils forming mantles. The groomsmen were-Mr. James Willans, Mr. Charles Bingham, Mr. J. W. Pye-Smith, and Mr. Smith, of Manchester. Numerous friends of the two families were present. Later in the day, the happy couple took their departure to London en route for the Continent.

1871

The 1871 Census

The 1871 census shows that the Bingham family were staying in a hotel - 6 Eversfield Place, St. Mary Magdalen, Hastings, on the night of the census:

Charles Henry Bingham (22), their son
Agnes J Dyson (23), a visitor

Only one member of the domestic staff is present on the night - Thomas Wood (39, coachman).

    Still in residence at No. 2 is widow Sarah Watkinson (78) and un-married daughters Sarah W. (46) and Fanny (38).  Two domestic servants also call No. 2 β€œhome”.

  • No. 4 Broomgrove Road - The Harwood Family
    Widow Hannah Harwood (67) is again in residence at No. 4 along with un-married daughter Elizabeth A. (39). They are looked after by two domestic servants.

  • No. 6 Broomgrove Road - Unoccupied

  • No. 8 Broomgrove Road - The Smith Family
    Un-married Accountant and shareholder Margaret D. Smith (71) is now in residence at No. 8 along with two domestic servants.

  • No. 10 Broomgrove Road - The Hebblethwaite Family
    Recently widowed Harriet (60) shares the house with un-married daughter Fanny (34), daughter and son-in-law Lucy H. and Whitefield G. Wills (both 29) and widowed father-in-law Robert (93). Two domestic servants care for the family.

  • No. 12 Broomgrove Road - The Brownhill Family
    Now the home of retired manufacturer Henry J J Brownhill (52) and his family - wife Elizabeth (57), un-married daughter Mary A. (22) and son William (12). One domestic servant looks after the family.

  • No. 14 Broomgrove Road - The Boaler Family
    Unmarried ladies school head, Martha A. Boaler (46) and her sister, Eliza (48) are at home on the night of the census, along with un-married assistant teacher Susanna Russell (28) and un-married boarder Hannah Gill (50). There is also a domestic servant at home that evening.

  • No. 16 Broomgrove Road - The Gilmour Family
    The Gilmour’s appear to have moved from No, 18 to No. 16. Duncan Gilmour (53) a wine and spirit merchant, is at home with wife Eliza (52) un-married daughters Eliza (25), Jane (23), Ellen (21) and Agnes (10). Sons Duncan (18) and Charles (16), both un-married, are also at home along with Duncan’s Scottish un-married nephew, Duncan Clark (20). There are two domestic servants present.

  • No. 18 Broomgrove Road - The Atkinson Family
    Retired Sheffield born draper, William Atkinson (71) along with wife, Caroline F. (54), un-married daughter Caroline F. (21) and un-married sons William H. (27), Joseph F. (26), Edward (24), John F. (20)  and Henry B. (18) are all at home along with William’s widowed mother-in-law, Charlotte Briggs (76) and their one domestic servant.

  • No. 20. Broomgrove Road- The Cam Family
    Un-married Mary Cam (71) is still in residence at the time of the census. She has the company of two domestic servants.

  • No. 22 Broomgrove Road (Room over Stable) - The Lound Family
    Coachman Thomas Lound (34) and his wife Elizabeth (49) are in residence over the stable, along with Thomas’s niece Ann Johnson (10).

  • No. 22 Broomgrove Road - The Moss Family
    Steel files manufacturer Joshua Moss (69) and wife Mary (63) are now in residence at No. 22 along with their un-married daughter Emily (29). Three domestic servants look after the family.

  • 59 Clarkehouse Road - The Branson Family
    Matlock born solicitor Thomas Branson (78) and wife Martha (76) are again in residence, along with un-married daughter Caroline W. (30). Even though there are fewer people in the household than 10 years ago, they are still being looked after by two domestic servants.

  • No. 7 Broomgrove Road - The Law Family
    Tobacco manufacturer, William Law (52) and wife Harriet E. (56) are in residence along with un-married tobacco manufacturer son Arthur E. (22). Two domestic servants are also in residence.

  • No. 9 Broomgrove Road - The Frith Family
    The Frith family are still in residence. Optician Peter Frith, (67), wife Frances M. (64) and un-married daughter Fanny B. (31) make up the household as well as two domestic servants.

  • No. 11 Broomgrove Road - The Parker Family
    Widowed Samuel Parker (82) is also still living in Broomgrove House, along with his widowed sister, Jane Casson (78), still as housekeeper. Two other domestic servants are also in residence.

  • No. 23 Broomgrove Road - The Roberts Family
    House broker and estate agent John B. Roberts (53) is in residence, although his wife appears to be away. Solicitor son John B. (27) is however at home. Two domestic servants are in residence too.

  • No. 25 Broomgrove Road - The Blatherwick Family
    John Blatherwick (44), a sugar merchant, wife Maud (33) and children Florence D. (12), Harold N. (7), Blanche (5) and Kate (3) are all at home, along with three domestic servants.

  • No. 27 Broomgrove Road - The Bissett Family
    Plumber William Bissett (44), wife Sarah (45), son’s James F. (11) and Laurence C. (9), un-married daughter Maud L. (16) and youngest daughter Sarah A. (6) are in residence on the night of the census along with dress maker visitor Mary A. Hardington (46). There are also two domestic servants present.

  • No. 29 Broomgrove Road - The Chesterman Family
    Measuring tape manufacturer William Chesterman (35) is at home with his wife, Emma (25), and his widowed mother, Harriet (70). There are two domestic staff present too.
